Wallabies call in big guns against Boks

Joe Schmidt is set to reinforce the Wallabies with internationally-based stars for the opening Rugby Championship Tests against the Springboks in August.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, 2023 World Cup captain Will Skelton and big winger Marika Koroibete will be recalled to the Wallabies squad for the Tests in Brisbane and Perth.

Schmidt has only selected players based in Australia for the July internationals against Wales and Georgia, but with the pending arrival of the world champions, is set to cast his net wider to significantly strengthen his squad.

La Rochelle lock Skelton last played for the Wallabies at the 2023 World Cup in the opening pool stage match against Georgia, but suffered a calf injury that ruled him out of the rest of the tournament.

The 32-year-old has signed a contract extension with La Rochelle to stay with the 2023 European champions until at least 2028.

Meanwhile, Koroibete has been playing for former Wallabies head coach Robbie Deans in Japan for league finalists Saitama Wild Knights.

The winger started all four of Australia’s pool games at the World Cup, scoring one try, and was set to retire from international rugby but made a U-turn after the departure of Eddie Jones.

Schmidt is expected to name the Wallabies squad for the Rugby Championship this week.
