CUT have been stripped of the five log points they picked up in the opening round of the Varsity Cup.

The Ixias scored five tries in their 29-13 bonus-point win at UJ on 17 February.

However, Netwerk24 reports that the visitors have since been punished for fielding an ineligible player, Kgothatso “KT” Sono, who was a student at UJ last year and did not complete the postgraduate qualification for which he was registered in the past year.

Helgard Muller, the deputy manager of CUT’s sports department, said they had held a meeting on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the issue and that an investigation would take place after which a report would be compiled.

CUT have now dropped from third on the Varsity Cup log to fifth, with four log points from their round-two win against UCT on Monday, while UJ remain seventh with just one point from their two matches.
