The Springboks are in currently in one of the best era’s in their history and in the history of rugby.
The current Springboks side is one of the greatest Bok teams of all time. Moreover, they are up there at the top of the debate as one of the best rugby sides to ever play.
However, all good things come to an end. Several top Boks who have been instrumental to their recent success are heading towards the end of their iconic and legendary careers.
SPRINGBOKS ENTERING THE LATTER STAGE OF THEIR CAREERS
Trevor Nyakane, Deon Fourie, Faf De Klerk, Cobus Reinach, Makazole Mapimpi and Willie le Roux are all entering the latter stages of their Springbok careers.
As reported on The South African, Nyakane is unlikely to represent the Springboks again. Meanwhile, Mostert (34), Fourie (38), De Klerk (33), Reinach (35), Mapimpi (34) and Le Roux (35) are all facing imminent ends to their respective illustrious and storied careers.
Interestingly, Rassie confirmed that Fourie is still in the running to play for the Boks. Despite being 38. However, given his age (he turns 39 this year), he will not have many seasons left in him. He is already an anomaly, while past the normal age that players play until. Most forwards retire at 34-36 but he is still fit and in top nick. Meaning, he has a few more tests in him but he is certainly heading towards the end of his rugby career.
Faf will be 35 at the 2027 Rugby World Cup. Backline players usually retire at 33-35 years old. Meaning, he could retire at the next RWC or even earlier if he chooses. Likewise, Reinach will be 37. Therefore, he is likely to retire before the next RWC.
LEGENDS ON THE BRINK OF HISTORY
Finally, Mapimpi and Le Roux are both on the brink of massive milestones.
Le Roux is set to make his 100th appearance for the Springboks this year. He currently sits on 98 test caps, just two away from become a historian. Therefore, he joins an elite crop of Bok legends such as John Smit, Victor Matfield, Bryan Habana, Percy Montgomery and Eben Etzebeth.
Meanwhile, Mapimpi is on the brink of becoming the second-highest try scorer in Bok history. He currently shared this honour with Joost with both legends on 38 tries. Meaning, he is a try away from overtaking Joost and taking up this prestigious honour.
Ultimately, Le Roux will be 37 and Mapimpi will be 36. As outside backs they will be way past their prime.
Therefore, they will likely bow out shortly after achieving these respective feats.
