Springbok star set to return, quell injury fears

Springbok star Eben Etzebeth was last involved in frontline action with the Sharks towards the end of last year, but a head knock he suffered has since had far-reaching ramifications.

After battling with ongoing symptoms, Etzebeth has continued to be "managed by concussion specialists" as the Sharks have ensured that he is not rushed back too soon.

Despite a couple of occasions where the Springbok star seemed ready to return, only to suffer another setback, it now appears that he is closer than ever to returning.

Just last week, Etzebeth posted a light-hearted picture to social media, but which showed him back in contact training. The image showed him taking a hit from good friend Siya Kolisi, and the big lock joking captioned the picture by saying: “Was there foul play?”

It drew a sharp response from Kolisi, who stated: “No foul play, I was passive and first contact was on the hips, play on!”

In all seriousness, though, it does show that Etzebeth is well integrated back in training and quite possibly in line for selection when the Sharks host Zebre this Saturday.

Will Sharks be boosted by return of Springbok powerhouse Eben Etzebeth?

In the latest word from Sharks coach John Plumtree on the matter earlier this month, he admitted that he was still wary to provide a prematurely positive update on Etzebeth, but it does seem that the wait for his comeback is nearly over.

"I am too scared to tell you anything positive," Plumtree told the media in the build up to a recent United Rugby Championship clash with the Lions. "When I got my hopes up we ended going backwards again.

"He has trained well and we are hoping is not far away… As I have said, I am a bit too nervous to give any positive timelines, but it is starting to look much better."
