It has long been speculated that Van der Merwe would trade Ellis Park for Kings Park later this year and both the Lions and Sharks confirmed as much today with brief statements.

"Emirates Lions speedster Edwill van der Merwe has opted not to renew his contract with the franchise at the end of the 2024/25 season," the said in a short statement released on their social media platforms.

The Sharks’ welcoming message to the Springbok wing was even shorter and simply read: “Welcome to the Sharks family, Edwill van der Merwe”.

The 28-year-old will link up with fellow Springboks Siya Kolisi, Eben Etzebeth, Vincent Koch, Bongi Mbonambi, Ox Nche, Trevor Nyakane, Ntuthuko Mchunu, Jason Jenkins, Phepsi Buthelezi, Aphelele Fassi, Makazole Mapimpi, Lukhanyo Am, Andre Esterhuizen, Francois Venter, Grant Williams and Jaden and Jordan Hendrikse.

Van der Merwe left the Stormers in 2021 to join the Lions, where he took his game to the next level to ultimately become a capped Springbok.
