The Sharks survived a three-man deficit in the second half to overhaul the Vodacom Bulls at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

The Sharks weathered a set-piece assault from the Bulls. Despite being down to 12 men at one stage, they held firm to score three second-half tries and secure a 29-19 win in Pretoria.

Four players were sent to the sin bin in this match, including Sharks prop Ntuthuko Mchunu binned alongside lock pairing Jason Jenkins and Corne Rahl. Bulls veteran Willie le Roux also spent 10 minutes on the sidelines for the hosts in the first half.

Speedster Ethan Hooker cancelled out Bulls loosehead Jan-Hendrik Wessels’ opener, with Jordan Hendrikse slotting the conversion as well as a penalty to give the Sharks a 10-7 lead going into the break.

Hooker was joined by flanker Tino Mavesere, winger Yaw Penxe and a Jordan Hendrikse try. Flyhalf Siya Masuku added four points from the tee.

For the Bulls, Wessels’ try was complemented by a Johann Grobbelaar brace, while centre David Kriel and replacement flyhalf Boeta Chamberlain contributed two points apiece.

The Sharks will look for another SA derby scalp when they travel north to face the Lions at Ellis Park next week, while the Bulls have an opportunity to regroup when they host the Stormers at Loftus on 1 March.
