Saffas Abroad: Du Preez, Pollard pack a punch

Springbok flyhalf Handre Pollard and Sale’s Rob du Preez starred with the boot in round 9 of the English Premiership on Saturday.

English Premiership:
– Four South Africans featured for the Sale Sharks in their 38-0 win against the Bristol Bears at Ashton Gate. Flyhalf Rob du Preez scored 15 points from the tee, while lock Ernst van Rhyn was joined by Jean-Luc and Dan du Preez in the back row. Former Sharks and Cheetahs centre Benhard Janse van Rensburg started for the Bears.

– Bok prop Thomas du Toit dotted down for Bath in a 68-10 demolition of Saracens at the Recreation Ground. Scrumhalf Louis Schreuder and tighthead prop Francois van Wyk played off the bench for the Premiership log-leaders, while Ivan van Zyl featured at No 9 for Saracens.

– Springbok flyhalf Handre Pollard scored 14 points via the boot in the Leicester Tigers’ thrilling 34-34 draw with Harlequins in London. Former Vodacom Bulls flank Hanro Liebenberg also started for the Tigers, while lock Irne Herbst represented Quins.

Japan League One:
– Springbok loose forward Kwagga Smith captained the Shizuoka Blue Revs to a thumping 62-18 win against the Urayasu D-Rocks. Simon Miller was also in the back row, while former Lions centre Sylvian Mahuza started in midfield and Damian Markus featured on the wing. Lock Lourens Erasmus and Springbok No 8 Jasper Wiese started for the D-Rocks.

–  Five South Africans featured for the Kubota Spears in their 26-24 defeat against the Saitama Wild Knights at the Kumagaya Stadium in Saitama. Springbok hooker Malcolm Marx was joined in the pack by lock duo Merwe Olivier and David Bullbring as well as flank Tyler Paul. Former Stormers centre Rikus Pretorius started for the Spears, while ex-Sharks lock Ockie Bernard and Springbok centre Damian de Allende were in the Wild Knights XV.

– Springbok duo Faf de Klerk and Jesse Kriel started for the Yokohama Canon Eagles in their 36-18 defeat against the Kobe Steelers at the Noevir Stadium Kobe in Hyogo. Former Bulls utility forward Willie Potgieter started at flank for the Steelers.

Top 14:
– Former Cheetahs forward Uzair Cassiem started for Bayonne as they cruised past Castres 33-12 at the Stade Jean-Dauger in Bayonne. Cassiem, capped eight times by the Springboks, ran out at No 8.

– Springbok scrumhalf Cobus Reinach crossed the whitewash in Montpellier’s 22-18 win against Clermont.

– Prop Carlu Sadie started for Bordeaux Begles in a 21-17 win against Toulon. Former Sharks centre Rohan Janse van Rensburg came off the bench for Bordeaux.

– Former Stormers duo Lee-Marvin Mazibuko and Hacjivah Dayimani played off the bench for Racing 92 in a 25-25 stalemate against Lyon in Nanterre. Ex-Bull Arno Botha was at openside flank for Lyon.
