Steven Kitshoff is "at peace" regarding his professional rugby career as the Springbok prop provides the latest update on his recovery from a neck fusion operation.

Kitshoff suffered the injury during a Currie Cup match between Western Province and the Griffons late last year.

Speaking in a wide-ranging interview with Sport24, the two-time World Cup winner addressed his long-term health after undergoing surgery towards the end of 2024, to fuse his C1 and C2 vertebrae.

"The specialist is happy with my progress," Kitshoff said. "I'll probably start rehab soon, but I'm in no rush to return. I want to ensure my health and neck are strong before deciding."

Although only one player has returned to rugby from such a procedure at a lower level, the inaugural Vodacom URC-winning skipper remains cautiously optimistic.

"I still have the passion and drive. If it's not meant to be, I'll make peace with it, but I haven't thought beyond next month," the Stormers star added.

"I'm proud of what I've done – winning the Rugby Championship, URC, and Currie Cup. If this is the end, I've made great memories."

Kitshoff admitted the surgery has reduced his neck mobility by 50% but welcomed the extended time off after 12 intense years at the top level of professional rugby.

"This time has been refreshing, almost like a sabbatical. It's allowed me to focus on my life outside of rugby," the 32-year-old added.
