Last month it was confirmed that FNB would become the principal sponsor of the Springboks and all national teams – with the banking giant's logo taking centre stage on the front of all team jerseys.

Whereas FNB used to be on the back of the Springbok jerseys, it was subsequently also announced that Pick N Pay would now replace that spot.

FNB’s partnership extension comes after the company had already become the women’s team principal sponsor three years ago, while Pick n Pay has signed a four-year contract as a Tier 1 sponsor of SA Rugby.

The value of the Springbok jersey has increase tenfold over the last few years during a period of unprecedented success.

FNB reportedly beat out interest from international brands, in addition to various current and local sponsors, with the Springbok jersey reported to have a value of approximately R300m, a far cry from the dark days of 2016 when SA Rugby was struggling to fetch R30m from sponsors.

According to reports, FNB’s deal is worth around £6.3 million (R156.4 million annually), while the Pick n Pay deal is valued at approximately £2.94 million (R73m) per year.

The overall value of Springboks’ sponsorships is also said to have surged from around £3.3 million (R81.94m) to around £6.7 million (R166.4m) in just six years.

Springboks are hot property

Welcoming the change in title sponsor, Rian Oberholzer, the CEO of SA Rugby, stated: "FNB has been an outstanding partner to the Springboks and rugby for many years and we are delighted that we have aligned to take the relationship to the next level.

"To have them partner all our national teams is a step change for our game and we look forward to continuing a long and successful partnership."

Talking about the Pick n Pay deal, Oberholzer added: "Through this partnership, Pick n Pay and SA Rugby unite to uplift, empower, and inspire. Just as the Springboks and our other national teams play for the pride of the nation, Pick n Pay's people have made a difference every day for over 50 years.

"The company has a proud legacy, serving South Africans and always being there for communities in need. Both teams prove that through teamwork and commitment, we can inspire a nation, both on and off the field.

"We are particularly excited that Pick n Pay will be assisting us in promoting the community game through their partnership with the Gold Cup. Similarly, they are backing our commitment to the women's game by partnering us in a new elite competition that is in the planning stage."
