Defending champions Glasgow scored six unanswered tries to thrash the Lions at Scotstoun Stadium on Saturday night in round 14 of the URC.

Buffeted by 70kmph gusts down the length of the field this contest was heavily influenced by conditions, as highlighted by all of the points being scored in the first half when the hosts played with a tailwind.

Glasgow blew to a 42-0 half-time lead, the teams changed ends at the break and the second half was scoreless. At one point in the first half, a Lions restart went up and came back across the halfway line.

Flyhalf Adam Hastings kicked six conversions and scored a try for a haul of 17 points, while the four remaining try-scorers included former Lions prop and Scotland international Nathan McBeth, winger Jamie Dobie (2), hooker Grant Stewart and scrumhalf George Horn – the latter overtaking DTH van der Merwe as Glasgow’s all-time leading try-scorer (55).

While Glasgow must be credited with their defence in denying the tourists any access to the scoreboard in the second half, the Lions’ hopes of a rebound from the six-try siege were dented when scrumhalf Nico Steyn was yellow-carded at the end of the first half.

The result leaves the defending champions four points clear of the third-placed Bulls and eight behind leaders Leinster, while the Lions sank to 14th – their lowest position of the season – and more than one win outside the top 8.

The Lions remain in Scotland this week, shifting camp to the capital for Friday night’s round-of-16 Challenge Cup showdown against Edinburgh, while Glasgow host Leicester in the Champions Cup.
