Mohamed Haouas’ three-month sentence for drunk-driving requires him to follows a strict schedule when training and playing matches for Montpellier.

The 31-year-old out-of-favour France prop was arrested in December – a week after signing a two-year contract extension with his club – after being found asleep at the wheel. His blood alcohol level was well above the legal limit.

Haouas, who had previously been convicted for domestic violence and participation in a nightclub brawl, was on 1 March sentenced to house arrest and has to wear an electronic bracelet that allows authorities to track his location.

However, the front-rower is allowed to train and play matches for Montpellier.

Midi Olympique reports that the club provides Haouas with a precise schedule that he passes on to the prison integration and probation services.

By following this schedule, he is able to remove his bracelet during training sessions and matches before quickly putting it back on afterwards.

“The timing is quite tight, he won’t be able to hang around and have a drink,” explained his lawyer Marc Gallix.

Haouas returned to action off the bench in Montpellier’s Top 14 match at Pau last Saturday.
