Bok Women 'bomb squad' bashes Spain in Cape Town

The Springbok Women round of their match preparations for the WXV 2 with a confidence boosting triumph over Spain in the Mother City on Thursday.

The immense improvement and gains the South Africans have made under the tutelage of Swys de Bruin continue to be on show, as they overcame a difficult start to trounce the visitors in front of a small, but passionate Cape crowd.

Hooker Lindelwa Gwala scored either side of the break and fullback Libbie Janse van Rensburg, who played poorly, redeemed herself with a second half to become the first-ever Springbok Women’s player to reach the 200 Test points. But the standout player of the game was Vainah Ubisi, who capped off a fine display with a try of her own.

MATCH RECAP: SPRINGBOK WOMEN BOUNCE SPAIN

The Springbok Women withstood an eight minute onslaught on their tryline, one of which was played with 14 women after conceding a yellow card, and that set the tone for the rest of the game.

For all their endeavour and enterprise on attack, Spain were simply unable to live with the Springbok Women's physical.

South Africa were the dominant force at scrum time, on the ground and in the tackle. But their execution at lineout and their finishing close to the tryline left much to be desired, particularly in the first half.

Spain crossed the tryline first for a converted try soon after the Springbok Women returned to their full complement.

Aseza Hele pulled five points back for South Africa with a powerful run from close quarters. Unfortunately, the conversion went astray.

But trailing by two didn't do much to dent the Springbok Women's confidence. In fact, the Hele power run spurred them and soon they were the ones exerting all the pressure.

They ran Spain ragged by taking the ball through the phases and soon Gwala burrowed over to put South Africa ahead for the first time. And that's how it stayed until the break.

It was one-way traffic in the second half as the Springbok Women pulled away on the scoresheet following the introduction of their own version of the famed Bok ‘Bomb Squad’.

The South Africans outscored their visitors 24 points to 12, in a well-rounded display that proves their defence is just as good as their attack, if not better.
