The Lions have confirmed the departure of Edwill van der Merwe at the end of the season, paving the way for the Springbok winger to join a local rival.

In a brief statement on Monday, the Lions announced the 28-year-old will not extend his stay at Ellis Park after four impressive seasons with the Johannesburg outfit.

"Emirates Lions speedster Edwill van der Merwe has opted not to renew his contract with the franchise at the end of the season of the 2024/25 season," the statement read.

In a recent social media clip, the Sharks teased the signing of Van der Merwe. According to reports, the Durbanites fended off competition from Premiership club Sale Sharks.

He will strengthen a Bok-laden backline that includes Makazole Mapimpi, Lukhanyo Am, Andre Esterhuizen, Grant Williams and Jaden and Jordan Hendrikse.

Van der Merwe left the Stormers in 2021 for Joburg where he has thrived under Lions head coach Ivan van Rooyen, the one-Test flyer's pace and finishing ability making him one of the most dangerous wings in the Republic.
