While continuing to hone his craft alongside the world-class Eben Etzebeth, Salmaan Moerat is fired up to play a key role as a second-row powerhouse for the Springboks.

With injuries sidelining world champions Lood de Jager and Jean Kleyn, Moerat is poised for a spot in the Bok matchday squad for the upcoming two Tests against Ireland in South Africa, the first at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

“It is any player’s goal to be involved in the 23-man team every week,” he told Sunday newspaper Rapport. “I have to make the most of every opportunity.

"The only way to repay the coaches for their trust in me is to show on the playing field that I am good enough for the task.”

Having played only four Tests since his 2022 debut, the 26-year-old Moerat remains unfazed by added pressure, aiming to contribute effectively.

“I want to contribute to the team. If I am privileged to play, I must know my details and bring my side," he said.

"When I’m not playing, I want to help the 23 with their preparations. The only pressure on me is to maintain good standards.”

Moerat draws inspiration from Etzebeth, adding: “Eben is the best in the world. “Being able to rub shoulders with him for the last few years was exceptional.

"He is a master at what he does. There is mutual respect. It’s very easy to chat with Eben, and you’d be a fool not to tap into his knowledge.”

Moerat has also turned several injury setbacks over the last few seasons into opportunities for growth and improvement.

Reflecting on his rehab journey, the DHL Stormers skipper shared, “Since I had to follow a rehabilitation program for a long time due to my injuries, I was able to become stronger and fitter.

“I feel good. I believe that if you are fitter, you enjoy your rugby more.”
