Blitzboks bash Ireland to kick-start Cape Town party

The Blitzboks were victorious in the first of their two must-win pool games at the Cape Town Sevens on Saturday morning, beating Ireland 36-7.

With the implementation of a new format at the Cape Town Sevens, South Africa came into this pool encounter knowing there was no room for error. Any but victory, would put them under pressure in the qualification process for the semi-finals.

And much to the crowd’s delight, the Blitzboks played like men possessed. In what was one of their quickest starts of the season, the hosts raced to a 24-0 lead with Quewin Nortje, Impi Visser and David Brits dotting down.

Ireland managed to score one try in the second half, but two more tries, by Visser and Mfundo Ndhlovu put the game to bed.

Rookie Donavan Don was employed at the Blitzboks’ chief playmaker and with three try assists, he starred in the role. Ricardo Duarttee was the designated goal-kicker.
