All Blacks star set for Japanese move

Veteran New Zealand scrumhalf TJ Perenara is expected to part ways with the Hurricanes at the end of 2024, according to reports in New Zealand.

New Zealand's Heraldreports that the All Blacks and Hurricanes halfback is set to leave New Zealand rugby, joining Japanese club Black Rams Tokyo.

Perenara, who has been a stalwart for the Hurricanes with 163 appearances and a key figure in the All Blacks’ 2015 World Cup triumph, will make his second move to Japan after his 2021 stint with NTT Red Hurricanes.

This decision comes after a challenging period for the 32-year-old, who overcame two Achilles surgeries that kept him sidelined for 18 months.

Perenara’s remarkable comeback saw him reclaim the No 9 jersey for the All Blacks earlier this month, only to suffer a knee injury against England. Despite this setback, he is expected to return for the Rugby Championship.

His expected move follows Ardie Savea’s departure, leaving a significant leadership void at the Hurricane. An official announcement on Perenara’s future is anticipated soon.
