Penaud show sees Bordeaux-Begles rout sloppy Sharks

MATCH REPORT: Star French wing Damian Penaud scored six tries as Bordeaux-Begles routed a sloppy Sharks team 66-12 in a Champions Cup encounter at Stade Chaban-Delmas on Sunday.

The 10 tries to two hammering saw Bordeaux top Pool One and the tournament seedings with a full house of 20 points, the Top 14 pace-setters Bordeaux-Begles setting out their stall as serious challengers to the defending champion Stade Toulousain.

The Sharks dropped into filth place and relegated to the second-tier Challenge Cup.

Ulster claimed the final Pool One qualifying spot.

After taking an early 12-0 lead (after seven minutes), the home team scored 66 unanswered points in the next 70-off minutes.

Despite dominating possession (56 percent) and territory (63 percent) in the first half, the Sharks were a touch too frantic and made some costly errors in the red zone.

Their shocking tackle success rate (only 57 percent) also cost the visitors dearly.

In the second half the unforced errors and missed tackles mounted at an alarming rate - flyhalf Siya Masuku the biggest culprit, looking disinterested and way out of his depth at this level.

In contrast, Bordeaux No.10 Matthieu Jalibert produced a masterclass in playmaking - teaching the Sharks a valuable lesson in game management and creative play.

And then there was Penaud, who put on a scintillating show for the packed Stade Chaban-Delmas.

The Sharks got off to the perfect start - a penalty that set up a line-out, the subsequent maul, making ground before the ball was unleashed to the backs - flyhalf Siya Masuku finishing off a well-executed move. Masuku added the conversion - 7-0 after five minutes.

That was quickly followed by another penalty, line-out and a backline move that saw Hakeem Kunene - a late inclusion at fullback - finishing off another sublime move. The conversion attempt was wide of the mark - `12-0 after eight minutes.

Bordeaux eventually awoke from their early slumber - winning a scrum penalty, setting up a line-out, followed by a few forward rushes. The ball was eventually swung wide where Damian Penaud went over on the right wing.

Matthieu Jalibert missed his conversion attempt (5-12 after 12 minutes), but there was further bad news for the visitors, as Hakeem Kunene was yellow-carded for a high tackle.

It went from bad to worse when Penaud intercepted a stray pass and sprinted 20-odd metres for his and his team's second try. This time Jalibert added the conversion - 12-all after 20 minutes.

In the 25th minute Bordeaux was reduced to 14 men, hooker Connor Sa yellow-carded for a high tackle.

The Sharks had opportunities in a period of territorial advantage, while being a man up, but they were not clinical enough in their execution.

They were again made to pay for their inaccuracy and sloppiness, as Penaud scored hit hat-trick try on the stroke of half-time - a well-executed move from a scrum five metres out. Jalibert added the conversion as the French team took a 19-12 lead into the break.

Bordeaux captain Maxime Lucu made the Sharks pay for more sloppy play when the home team countered from inside their 22 after an aimless grubber by Siya Masuku and then a very ordinary chase back when Lucu kicked ahead and collected the ball. Jalibert's conversion made it 26-12 after just 44 minutes.

Ugo Boniface was net to charge over from close range, after a Bordeaux maul was sacked. Jalibert's conversion made it 33-12 after 50 minutes - the match over as a contest.

Yoram Moefana, Penaud (his fourth, fifth and six tries) and Jacques Nguimbous rubbed further salt into the festering Shark wounds as the rout took on alarming proportions.

The result means the Sharks dropped down to the Challenge Cup - the competition they won last year to earn a seat at Europe's top table.
