Like father, like son.

British and Irish Lions head coach Andy Farrell was a guest on the Late Late Show on Friday night and he had a brilliant response to what it’s like to coach against his son, Owen.

For the first time in many years, neither Andy nor Owen will be involved in the Six Nations this year, with the Ireland head coach temporarily stepping away from his duties to coach the Lions.

Owen stepped away from the international scene last year for personal reasons and has since joined Racing 92 in France, making him ineligible for England selection.

But the pair have come up against each other many times in the past and when Andy was asked what it’s like to come up against his eldest son, he had an interesting answer.

"Very easy, actually," Farrell said when asked how difficult it was to coach Ireland against England when Owen played.

"I know that sounds sadistic in a way, but it was very easy because I know he would do anything to beat me. So why wouldn’t I do it to beat him as well?

"On a serious note, I’ve coached him when he was a junior coming through at Saracens, and that was obviously – professional. When it’s your job and your duty, you get on with it.

"I suppose it’s harder for every one else around the family, but for us, it’s always been about the job in hand and doing the best that you can for your team."
