Carr drives home his point to Bulls

Veteran loose forward Nizaam Carr said the next generation of Vodacom Bulls stars can launch their careers to the next level by helping the Herd win the Currie Cup.

Carr, who has skippered the Pretoria outfit in this year's edition of rugby’s oldest competition, has won the Currie Cup with the Bulls and DHL Western Province and understands the importance and value of the tournament for players and teams.

He believes the Currie Cup remains a vital platform for young players to make a name for themselves and push for higher honours, with Saturday's semi-final against the Sharks XV at Loftus Versfeld offering just that opportunity.

With a place in the showpiece against either the rampant Lions or defending champions, the Cheetahs, at stake, Carr and Phiwe Nomlomo’s charges are ready for the challenge.

“I will always see the competition as a great opportunity to play at a higher level going forward,” the six-Test Springbok said. “Dream big, regardless of which competition you play in and whether you are 40, 25, or 21 years old.”

The Bulls have brought in several seasoned campaigners for the playoffs, including Marcell Coetzee, fresh from their Vodacom URC pre-season training.

Carr emphasised that integrating these players must not disrupt the team's cohesion. “Marcell made it clear that we are one group. This is not a case of a group of players who got us to the semi-finals but now have to stand aside.”

He also highlighted the collective spirit within the squad. “Whether you play in the first or last match or in the semi-final, everyone has a responsibility. The spirit is good, and the attitude is right.”

The Bulls are seeking revenge after their 24-18 loss to the Sharks in Durban last week. “We are never satisfied with losing, and it is nice that we get another chance against the Sharks on Saturday,” Carr added.

“They'll be confident after beating us, but it gives us extra motivation at Loftus. If we can handle their physicality and kicking game, I believe we will do well.”
