Former Ireland star sentenced

NEWS: Former Ireland international Brendan Mullin has been sentenced to three years imprisonment on Monday, after being found guilty of stealing more than 500,000 Euros from a bank.

A jury in Dublin earlier this month found the 61-year-old Mullin guilty of 12 out of 14 charges, which ranged from theft, deception and furnishing false information to the bank authorising invoice payments.

The offences occured between 2011 and 2013 when he was chief executive of Bank of Ireland Private Bank in the Irish capital.

Mullin won 55 caps for Ireland between 1984 and 1995, scoring 17 tries and also played at three World Cups in 1987, 1991 and 1995.

Judge Martin Nolan said Mullin offered no motive for his actions but could only infer that he was "somewhat desperate for funds and embarked on this endeavour to obtain money", national broadcaster RTE reported.

In sentencing, he said he took in account that the bank was repaid in full and not at a loss, and that Mullin had shown remorse.

But he said that a custodial sentence was inevitable.
