Vodacom Bulls centre David Kriel’s missed conversion influenced his match-winning penalty goal against Leinster at Loftus on Saturday.

Trailing 20-18 in the 83rd minute of the Vodacom URC match, the Bulls won a scrum penalty.

And Kriel, who had taken over the goal-kicking from substituted flyhalf Keagan Johannes, pointed to the posts.

“My previous kick [the attempted conversion of Johan Grobbelaar’s 71st minute try] struck the [right-hand] upright,” he told Rapport.

“I realised that I shouldn’t think too much. As I stepped back for that last kick I just said to myself: You’ve done thousands of kicks like this before; just do what you always do …

“And then the kick went over!”

REPORT: Kriel boots Bulls past Leinster

The Bulls ended Leinster’s 12-match winning run in this season’s Vodacom URC while remaining third on the log, one point ahead of the Sharks and four behind Glasgow.

“This victory is extremely positive for us as a group, simply because Leinster were still unbeaten and are at the top of the table,” Kriel said. “They are clearly doing something right and beating them means a lot for our self-confidence.

“The big thing is, as a group we were hungry, we were desperate and it showed tonight. When things got tough and we were behind, and it looked like Leinster were getting the upper hand, we didn’t go back into our shell. We simply kept knocking on the door.”
