Lions extinguish Dragons in Newport

The unbeaten Lions kicked and tackled their way to victory against the Dragons in the United Rugby Championship clash at Rodney Parade on Sunday.

Nico Steyn and Sanele Nohamba combined for 13 points off the boot as the Lions got their overseas tour off to a positive start with a 23-19 win in Newport that catapulted them into third place on the overall standings.

The Lions dominated territory and possession in the first half to go into the break with a 13-12 lead after surviving both a yellow card to hooker Franco Marais and a late push from the Dragons.

The teams traded tries after the restart before a scoreless final quarter ended with the unbeaten Lions celebrating their third victory of the URC season.

The Lions’ two electric tries came through fullback Quan Horn and flanker Jarod Cairns while flyhalf Nico Steyn converted two penalties and a conversion before replacement playmaker Sanele Nohamba added another conversion and a penalty.

For the Dragons, Wales thumper Taine Basham crossed twice, joined by fellow loosie Harrison Keddie – flyhalf Lloyd Evans converting two of his three shots from the tee.

The Lions continue their tour when they face Zebre in Parma, while the Dragons host Benetton at Rodney Parade on Saturday.
