Respect.
Ronan O’Gara had some very interesting comments about Sam Prendergast following his standout performance in Ireland’s Six Nations win over Scotland at Murrayfield.
Prendergast got the nod at 10 for the second successive week running despite a mixed performance against England, and Jack Crowley impressing off the bench.
The talented young playmaker was named Man of the Match in his first away game for his country and O’Gara was somewhat surprised by the lack of "respect" Prendergast gave the Scots – in a good way.
'He was really really good, it’s scary to think he’s only twenty-one. Maybe that’s how players are changing and young players coming into it feel a little bit more comfortable," O’Gara said on BBC.
"He didn’t show any nerves, he showed very little I suppose respect for an away game and he looked very very comfortable. If that’s what he’s doing at 21, imagine what he’ll be doing at 25 and 26. We’ve got a really good prospect on our hands.
"With the environment he’s in, he’ll be kept on his toes because he knows Jack Crowley is biting at his heel, he knows winning has become a habit, and if you want to drive standards you need to be really good.
"Being in the Irish team isn’t good enough for them anymore, they want to be man-of-the-match, they want to be talked about by their peers."
Serious praise from one of the all-time great Irish players and one of the most respected coaches in the modern game.
