A current Stormers player will start for the Cheetahs in their SA Cup match against Eastern Province on Saturday.

Netwerk24 reports that fullback Clayton Blommetjies was offered the chance to play for his former team while visiting his wife in Bloemfontein.

The 34-year-old has made just one appearance for the Stormers in this season’s Vodacom URC, against the Bulls in Cape Town. He came off the bench and missed a simple last-minute conversion attempt in a 33-32 defeat.

But Blommetjies will now get some much-needed game time, at flyhalf for the Cheetahs in Gqeberha on Saturday.

“I spoke to [Stormers coach] John Dobson last night [about Blommetjies],” Cheetahs coach Frans Steyn told Netwerk24. “We’ll see how it goes.

“He and I will probably have another chat next week. As we go along, we will sort things out.”

Steyn has been unable to name his team for the match due to injuries to two loose forwards.

“Sisonke [Vumazonke] rolled his ankle in training this afternoon and someone stepped on Daniel [Maartens]’s foot this morning,” he said.

The Cheetahs are currently sixth on the 10-team SA Cup log after two defeats in three matches.

The top four teams on the log will qualify for this year’s Currie Cup Premier Division.
