Hanekom: Wales never crossed my mind

Wales-eligible Cameron Hanekom says his heart was always with the Springboks as he embarks on his debut tour after getting a late injury-enforced call-up. DYLAN JOHNSON reports.

Hanekom is eligible to play for the Welsh through his grandmother who was born and raised in Wales, with his brother Storm spending a season training with the Dragons at hooker in 2021.

Having been overlooked earlier this year for the July Tests and Rugby Championship, despite outstanding form for the Vodacom Bulls in the URC, the 22-year-old is finally getting his chance for the Boks as an injury replacement for Damian Willemse.

When asked about the opportunity to represent Wales, Hanekom made it clear where his loyalties lie: “I must say I’ve always dreamed of becoming a Springbok, I will keep on working as hard as possible to make that dream come true. I’ve never thought of going to Wales or playing for them.”

Aside from his excellent form over the past two seasons, Hanekom’s versatility is also a big boost for the Boks.

Bulls coach Jake White recently hailed the loose forward’s ability to play across the back row as one of his greatest strengths. Comfortable at both No 6 and No 8, Hanekom agreed with his franchise coach.

“Yeah, I must say I am versatile when it comes to playing six, seven or eight, I don’t mind playing or have a preferable position at the moment.

“It’s more about just being able to have the mental switch that every position plays its different role and doing it to the best of my ability.”
