Why Townsend's move is a "no-brainer" for the Roosters

NRL journeyman Chad Townsend is set to join his fourth club with the Sydney Roosters reportedly acquiring the 33-year-old on a one-year contract for the 2025 season.

The 2016 Premiership winner has played 257 first grade games for the Cronulla Sharks, the Warriors and is currently the starting halfback for the North Queensland Cowboys.

The Daily Telegraph's David Riccio has praised the signing and believes the low-risk investment will pay off for the Roosters.

"Chad has agreed to a 12-month deal to join the Sydney Roosters from next year," Riccio told SEN 1170 Breakfast.

"How will he be used? It's clear that Chad will play as that backup half role with (roosters coach) Trent Robinson looking to get that Sam Walker and Sandon Smith combination rolling.

"Every time I have spoken with Robinson, he says the future is around those two halves.

"It says a lot when you can bring an experienced half in that you can guide Smith through or provide cover when required.

"It's a good signing and at the price of around $300,000, it's almost a no-brainer.

"Someone with Chad's experience (is invaluable), he has a good kicking game and he's a premiership winner."

The acquisition of Townsend is a handy inclusion to the Roosters' roster due to the retirement of veteran playmaker Luke Keary at the end of the 2024 season.

Riccio believes Townsend will act as a bridge between the next phase of the Roosters' long-term halves pairing.

"There is a vacuum of experience that will depart the Roosters at the end of this year," Riccio added.

"Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Joey Manu, Luke Keary (and) Daniel Tupou is also coming to the backend.

"Someone of Chad's experience is pivotal as the Roosters go through a mini transition phase and rebuild.

"There will be some outs for the Roosters next year that will take some adjustment.

"The arrival of Chad will ease the burden of the players that are leaving the club that will leave a hole."

Townsend will line up for the Cowboys in Round 18 when his side hosts the Manly Sea Eagles on Saturday.
