With Ben Hunt set to leave the Dragons in 2025, questions have been raised on the future of the St George Illawarra side.

Following news that Hunt has been given permission to speak with rival clubs, fans are split, although many are tending towards excitement for a fresh-faced club next season.

Channel Nine's rugby league Danny Weildler told SEN the Hunt move was inevitable, believing he only stayed on in 2024 as a support system for coach, Shane Flanagan. In turn, the Dragons were prepared for the impending deparutre of their veteran halfback.

"Flanagan needed Hunt in order to have some stability at that club," Weildler told SEN.

"Flanagan wants a trade for it and something in return. I don't know what a decent swap would be for Ben Hunt. It might involve money and/or players.

"Ben wants to return to Queensland and I don't know who has the money in Queensland to afford him without a trade.

"Do you trade an up and coming superstar like Jayden Camppbell for Ben Hunt?

"It will be tricky (but) I wouldn't rule out a Sydney club."

Weildler explains that after a year at the club, Flanagan has his footings and won't need to rely on the support of the captain.

Hunt has expressed the desire to leave the Dragons multiple times and with the club in a comfortable position, the panel believe next year the hooker's desires will be fulfilled.

"There will be other options for Ben Hunt," Weildler added. "I think he will leave the Dragons, and he will have to find a home."

"It's run its course and it's time to move on," Mat Rogers said on SEN.

"It's time for a fresh start."

Following a rocky season, Dragons fans are excited to enter 2025 with an established coach and fresh team with signings including Valentine Holmes and Corey Allen.

Despite losing a core figure in Ben Hunt, the panel and fans alike believe the future of the Dragons remains positive and this change will lead to a more cohesive squad.
