Melbourne Storm star Jahrome Hughes is looking to etch his name in the history books and become just the third player in NRL history to win both the Dally M Medal and Clive Churchill Medal in the same year.

Hughes took out the game's top individual honour at Wednesday night's Dally M Awards night, edging out Sydney Roosters star James Tedesco by one point.

With Hughes being the consensus pick to take out the top gong, many were surprised to see Tedesco staying close to the Storm half towards the end of the vote count, including SEN's Greg Alexander.

"I thought, 'Wow, is Jahrome Hughes' resting in Round 26 going to cost him'," said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

"I think Craig Bellamy was thinking the same, if you could read minds he was thinking,' Boy I hope the resting doesn't cost Jahrome Hughes.

"But it didn't he finished with a six-point game against the Broncos… he had four linebreaks, two try assists and three tries, he had a game.

"Tedesco had a great game against the Bunnies, finished the season very good, in great form."

If Hughes is to win the Clive Churchill Medal in the Grand Final, he'll become the first player since Jonathan Thurston in 2015 to do so.

The 2024 NRL Grand Final gets underway at 7:30 with the Melbourne Storm and Penrith Panthers battling it out for the Premiership.
