Bulls front-row bruiser braced for anything

The versatile Jan-Hendrik Wessels is applying his learnings with the Springboks at becoming a powerful asset at hooker and loosehead prop for the Vodacom Bulls.

Speaking to the media from Wales in the buildup to the round 5 Vodacom URC clash between the Bulls and Scarlets at Parc y Scarlets on Friday, the 23-year-old has embraced the challenge of mastering both positions, with a clear focus on honing his skills.

“It’s an ongoing process and I have to work hard to perform equally at hooker and prop,” Wessels told reporters. "As a prop, my scrum work is obviously important, and I also have to be involved in the loose play.

“At hooker, I have to be able to scrum well in a different position in the front row and also throw in well at the lineouts."

Wessels made his Bok debut against Portugal in July as a prop but continues to develop under both Bok coach Rassie Erasmus and Bulls boss Jake White's guidance.

He appreciates the learning experience with the national team, saying, “I’ve learned a lot in the short time I’ve been with the Boks, and I’d like to apply it to the Bulls when I get the chance.”

Looking ahead to Friday’s match in Llanelli, Wessels knows the conditions will be testing. “Rain is forecast, which means a lot more kicking. The big challenge is to adapt to the weather conditions. We must ensure our execution is good and sort out our discipline.”
